City of the dead and the Garbage city
The tour is designed to take you into the rich heart of Cairo, a beautiful and peaceful quarter of the city that is so often forgotten in the crowded map of the sightseeing of Cairo. It is called City of the dead. It is a place where the dead and the living are sharing the same space day and night. Thousands of old tombs with historical mosques used to be standing alone in peace in the far desert before Cairo expanded and swallowed them. Now you will see the ironic life style of people live inside some of the open court of some of the tombs, others built concrete residentials on a top of some of the forgotten tombs. We don't offer you to enter any of them but walking in the streets among both will give you enough of what you wish to feel there. However, we will be able to wonder inside some of the mosques, and from the top of the minarets we can get a panoramic view of the whole city.
We stop at a local coffee shop for a cup of Egyptian tea or some Arabic coffee before we head to the next adventure.
Now we are heading to to one of Cairo’s hidden wonders, The Garbage City. Yep, you read the name right. It is where Cairo collects the garbage, and then a hive of tens of thousands workers, drivers and traders work to recycle it. Hundreds thousands tons of garbage recycled every month inside that city, as the place is very busy, working hard hard every single day we will only be allowed to check it during our slow driving through it. However, deep into the heart of the Garbage City we will explore to visit an outstanding monastery (check the pictures at the bottom of the page). The monastery is located in the heart of the hills and is beautifully carved into the rocky surface. Once you have arrived you will meet with a local guide from the city and the monastery to tell you the stories and history of the city and the monastery.
